Publisher’s Note:  It has taken the scientific community a long time to move from its old, and insufficient, models of human biology and health to the knowledge we have today. While the institutions around us remain in a spectrum of time delays from this state of knowledge back to the 1950s, there are many new companies and scientists doing their best to move us into the 21st century.

In this discussion, SNS members will have a chance to learn about a leading-edge exploration of cellular health and function measured by metabolites, the small molecules that remain after a biochemical reaction occurs. It turns out – no surprise – that by looking closely at these metabolic byproducts, we can learn a great deal about the health of processes inside the cell.

As members will learn today, there is likely no single bullet, nor even a single family of answers, that defines human health. Rather, we are just beginning to learn about the states that might define health in a dynamic cellular environment in the liver, or lung, or – any human tissue. We are also learning about how metabolic metrics might change between cells, tissues, and their organs, as a person moves from one health state to another.

Welcome to the complex information state of 21st-century healthcare. – mra.
