Autonomy
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting with what may be the top AI team in Ireland. Among them were two professors with a lifelong background in autonomous-driving challenges, ranging all the way from what kind of cameras to use for a 360-degree view to how to recognize and avoid accidents in the making.
As we sat around the conference table, I said I wanted to check out an opinion with them: “I am of the belief that it is not possible to have autonomous driving, or flying, without explainable AI. What’s your view?” Without a moment’s hesitation, they agreed.
Of course, the unspoken problem behind this statement is that, as a Lawrence Livermore National Lab scientist said recently, there is only one company on the planet that has XAI today. [Disclosure: I am CEO of that company, Pattern Computer, which is why I was in Ireland and the UK.]
And if the statement is indeed accurate, the world has a big problem, on many levels.
